UNTWO is the World Tourism Organization, the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of sustainable and universally accessible tourism. The Best Tourism Villages awards recognizes those villages which are outstanding examples of rural tourism destinations and promotes, in particular, innovative and transformative approaches to the development of tourism in rural destinations. In 2023, the third edition of these awards, Văleni has been selected among the winners.
Văleni is a village in Moldova built along the Lower Prut. There are many picturesque landscapes in the area, including the Biosphere Reserve where Lake Beleu occupies two thirds of the surface. It is also a culturally rich region, which tries to preserve many traditions.
Văleni has been making efforts to support their cultural heritage and natural resources by making great use of innovation and technology and today is an example of ecotourism, recognized internationally.
In 2022 we started our collaboration with Văleni to create the first smart village experience. Our goal was to promote their tourist attractions and guide visitors. Not only the natural objectives, such as lakes, hills and meadows were added, but also small businesses like guest houses or museums.
For each point of interest, there was a feed created on the app with a detailed description and an integrated map. For the famous historical route, the “Petru Rareș trail”, which surrounds the Beleu lake, we created a guided tour, which would take the visitor step by step to each checkpoint and unlock new information as they reached it.
Tourists are now able to easily access all the experiences available in Văleni, through the Zoniz platform. They get information, maps and directions, a calendar with all notable events and a guided tour along a famous historical trail. Small businesses like museums or accommodations have their own space within the app.
